“In keeping with her wishes, Mitford herself had an inexpensive funeral, which...”
– The American Way of Death - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I was reading this article in the Guardian and ended up here. Not sure Ms Mitford would have got such a bargain in the UK with recent rises of 50% in 6 years. (via vnvobit)

madgebettany asked: I honestly don't remember how I first heard about the Mitfords. Maybe it was in the old Common Reader book catalog. Maybe it was in a biography of one of their contemporaries.

Why I think that they have held my interest for so long is because the Mitford saga is that rare "story" that has 6, count'em SIX, active and interesting heroines. It's like Mary...

It goes something along the lines of ‘Boud, the greatest of eccentrics, had committed to the most conformist of all regimes’. I found that…

Anonymous asked: I heard that Tom Mitford may have been gay, but can't really find anything on Google. Do you know anything about that?

ivebeenreadinglatelyannex asked: I really enjoyed Debo's new book--though I should say that I'm completely, totally the audience for it. It's funny and charming, more so in the earlier parts that deal with the sisters and parents, of course, but overall a lot of fun.

I wrote a bit about it at my blog back in the early winter:...

booklover206-deactivated2012010 asked: I read "Counting My Chickens" by Debo. It was witty, interesting, and fun. It's about her trying to turn this grand old house into something that can make money, it also makes an argument for local foods, organic, home gardening etc. Many famous people make cameos.

I also highly recommend Harold Acton's chatty, catty bio of Nancy.

thesoap-box asked: Have you read Deborah's autobiography? Is it any good? I read lots of magazine articles about it but wondered if it was worth the money
